Dear Readers,
I have enjoyed getting to know all of you as readers over the past few weeks and have especially enjoyed hearing your thoughts about books and seeing your enthusiasm for reading. It is always so interesting to know how readers connect to the text, and where their minds take them when they read.
The other day, a student told me he had abandoned a book because he did not understand it. Truthfully, this happens to all readers at some point, especially when we do not select books that are just right for us. However, in this student's case, he had been enjoying the book, and read most of it with ease. His breakdown in understanding (comprehension) only occurred at a particular part in the book, not the entire book. Readers, when this happens, we use our Fix-Up Strategies to "fix" our comprehension when it breaks down.
As we discuss fix-up strategies in Reading Workshop, I am curious what strategies you use to fix comprehension. What do you do when you do not understand a part of a book? How do you know when your understanding is broken and how do you try to fix it?

These are some fix-up strategies I use when I don't understand what I am reading
.Reread
.Slow down and reread
.Sound it out
.Visualize what is happening in the book
.Ask myself"Is this book just right for me?"
.Use contact clues
Also if I really don't understand it I.....
.Ask an adult for help
.Use a resorse or
.ABANDON the BOOK!
That is what I do when I don't understand the book or reeeeeeally don't understand the book.
When I don't understand a part of the book I ask myself "Is this book just right for me"? Then I stop and visualize. I reread and see what is happening in the book. Next I sound out the word I don't understand. Then I discuss it with a friend or a family member. Then I have to abandon the book. Context clues are a good way to know if you need to abandon the book or to not abandon the book. Thank you Ms.Sikes! :)
When I don't understand something when I am reading.........
.I reread
.I use literature clues
.I sound it out
.I talk it out with a friend
.I jot reminder notes
and so on and so forth. For how I know when my understanding is broken and how I fix it: If I start stuggling I might realize what I am missing if I reread the last chapter.
Thank you for helping me understand reading better Ms.Sikes.
Students,
You had some great insights last week about the strategies you use to comprehend a text when you read! When I do not understand a book, I usually write some notes in the margins or on a post-it to help me remember and comprehend what I am reading. I know when my understanding is broken because I cannot remember what happened in the story. I try to fix it be rereading and asking myself questions about the story, such as "Why did the character do that?"
I am enjoying the opportunity to work with you in Ms. Sikes' class!
All my best,
Miss Creagh
When I read and I start to not understand the book I reread, sound out the words, and visualize what is happening in the book. I know when a book is getting too hard when I stop understanding the words and I don't know the characters or what is happening. These are my answers and thoughts about the questions.
When I don't understand a book I reread, I use the fie finger rule, use literature ,and other stuff. Usually I try to push myself to read more if I don't like the book I am reading. If you are looking for a good book I think," The Red Pyramid."
When I read and don't understand what is happening in the book I...
-reread
-slow down
-visualize
-sound out
And if I still don't get what is happening I...
-Ask an adult
-ABANDON the book!
I know when my understanding is broken when I just can't keep my consentration, can't visualize,or just having troble sounding out words.
When my comprehension doesn't just come to me when I'm reading a whole part in a book, I ask my mom if she'll help me figure out what the words are then tell me what they mean. I guess that I should start looking in the dictionary before I ask an adult for help.
This is how I know when my comprehension has fallen apart. It's when the book that I'm reading has a lot of words that I don't know, and I can't pay attention very well. I also have to reread a lot. At that time I abandon the book.
(A book that I really recomend is Charlie and the chocolate Factory by Ronald Dhall.):-)
As im reading and I dont understand a book, my largest habit is rereading. It most likley works. If it does not work I use the five finger rule, because the book might just be to hard. But I still have other ways to fix words that I do not understand. I could sound it out or look it up and there is also many other ways to fix words that I do not understand. It is a great habit to use good stratigies before abandoning a book.
When I do not understand a part of a book I ....
.reread
. try to visulize what is happening in the book
.if I do not understand a word I can ask a friend or look it up in the dictonary
. If I still do not understand the book I can...ABANDON THE BOOK
When I don't understand a part of a book I am reading I reread, sound the word out, visualize what is happening in the book, and discuss the book it with family and friend. And if i still do not understand I abandon the book! I know when my understanding is broken is when I get confused and I don't know what anyone i stalking about. I try to fix my understanding by visualizing, rereading, and discussing the book with someone else.
if I don't understand a book I could:reread,5 finger rule, look it up in the dictionary, ask an adult,go on dictioary.com,use writing around it to figure it out.
When I don’t understand a book I use strategies like:
* I go back a few pages and read it over
* I read it slower
* If I don’t understand a word I think hard and try to figure out what it means
If I still don’t understand, I reread it one more time, and if I still can’t understand then I sometimes will abandon the book.
I try really hard not to abandon the book, but if it is not “just right” then I know I shouldn’t be reading it. If I don’t understand five or more words on two pages then my understanding is probably broken, so I need to fix it by either trying to find out what they mean or finding a new book.
In years past, I have just abandon the book but this year I will use fix up strategies when I am confused or am strugling.
Some fix up strategies that I use are:
*Re-read the sentence
*Re-read the page
*Talk it over with someone
Some last resort strategies are:
*Ask an adult for help
*Abandon the book
I know my understanding is broken when:
*I can't concentrate
*I feel like the book is to hard
*I don't want to read it anymore
when I have troble reading I vishulizes, reread, and slow down. I have learned I lot about littachure and reading. i have read more during b4th grade because I have chosen a just right book. i can't wait to learn more.
Here is what I think I do if I do not understand a book.
I think if this book is just right for me.
I reread.
Ask someone about the book.
If this book is not right for you the abandon the book.
When I don't understand a book here are some of my stratagies I like to use:
* reread
* reread and read in "slow-mo"
* use context clues
* visulize
* go back a couple of paragraphs
* ask a friend or parent
* use the dictionary
* use the five finger rule
* if I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND A BOOK I ABANDON IT
When I have trouble understanding a book first I reread and ask myself what just happened, and If it still does not make sense I slow down and read it again, I sound out the word with meaning and use context clues. If I really break my understanding I re-visualize the last page and make a new movie that might make more sense to me. If my understanding will not come back to mind and really need help some things i might do are... Use a dictionary or ask an adult for help. If I can NOT find my understanding and try these fix-up strategies over and over it will be time to...
ABANDON THE BOOK!
But when I know I have broke my understanding in a book I will lose focus and do not understand what is happening, then I can't visualize the scene in the book! Then I will use my strategies to fix my understanding! :-)
If I don't understand a word or a sentence I will...
reread that sentence or word
reread slower
think if I have read this word before
ask a parent
if I still don't don't understand the the word or sentence I will haft to abandon the book. You don't want to abandon the book.
When I do not understand a book I
reread,read alowed,or ask a friend
or someone I know that has read the book to explain it to me.If I do not understand a book I start not knowing the characters and don't get the book. I try to fix-it
by looking in my writers note book and using some of the stratges we
have learned about in class.
when i do not understand a book, i reread, vishuslize in my brain, ask a freid or adult, and if i still can't understand the book then i read a just right book.
When I am reading a book and I don't understand it, some strategies that I use are rereading a couple pages back, ask a friend or family member to help me figure out what is happening in the book, leave a note by the margin, but if those strategies don't work I have to abandon the book. If I can't figure out a word in the book, I look it up in the dictionary o r ask a family member to help me figure it out, even if that doesn't work I still have to abandon the boo. I try not to abandon the book, but it might not be "just right" for me.
When I am reading a book and I don't understand it, some of the strategies I use are the following:
. reread
. slow down and read
. stop and visualize what I read
. look up the meaning of a word I do not recognize
. stop and think if the book I'm reading is just right for me
If these do not work, I put the book down and take a break.
When I read a book that I don't understand I...
.reread
.sound the word out
.I ask mom or dad
.if all else fails... I abandon it.
Be for I abandon a book I...
.reread
.I make a movie in my mind.
.I ask mom or dad
.atlas I abandon the book
zb
when I don't understand a book I visualize, reread, try to connect, ask is this book" just right"for me, push myself, sound it out,ask an adult .If it is still not working out for me I abandon it. When I find a page where I can visualize I get a sticky note and I draw it and put it on the page.
When things in a book start not to make sense or are getting confusing, that is when I know my understanding is broken. Here are some of the fix up strategies I use. I reread when I don't understand a part. Or, if is complicated and hard and I do not understand a word, I will look at the words around it and then figure it out. After I have tried all of the fix up strategies and it is still not working, I use last resort strategies like getting help from an adult or skipping it and coming back. The very last thing I would do is abandon the book and you would almost never do that.
When I am reading and don't understand the book I...
*reread
*sound out the word
*Ask Mom, Dad, or teacher for help
*ask myself if it's a just right book
*abondan the book
I know my understanding is broken when I am...
*TOTALY not focesed(not concentrating)
*not being able to read more than at least 10 words and not understand it AT ALL!!
*It feels like the book is to hard for me.
I thought the blog was spectular! When i get stuck and don't understand in a book that i am reading i reread, but if that does not work i ask an adualt if it is a just right book. Some times it gets boaring and a couple of days later it gets really gets interesting. But if the adult said it is a just write book you push your self and mabey it gets better and less hard to understand.
