One Little Word (OLW)
Each new year, two of my cyber-mentors challenge teachers to find their One Little Word (OLW). The OLW is one word that will represent, or symbolize, the year ahead. The word should be personal and thoughtful. My mentors spend weeks thinking about their OLW, making sure they select a word that will really guide them.
I have thought a great deal about my OLW. For 2012, I selected "trust" as my One Little Word. I selected "trust" because sometimes I don't trust my own ability or God's timing. I need this word to remind me to trust not only His plan for me, but also to trust in the strengths and talents He has blessed me with, rather than worry about the future. Trust can apply to my life in so many ways - through friends, work, my students, my family, myself, and ultimately, God's plan for me. I will use this word to guide me through the days of 2012.
What is your One Little Word? How does this word apply to your life? How can you use your OLW to guide your year? Comment to this post with your OLW, and examples of how you can use your OLW this year. Here is a list of possible words to help you. Copy and paste this link if you need suggestions for a word.

Dear Ms.Sikes,
I think my one little word is trust. Sometimes I don't trust my friends as much as I would like to. I think it will help me throughout the year. I think I will trust my friends to help me with my work and other things.
Your student,
Jack Collins
This year my One Little Word is courage. I chose the word courage because I know I can't give up and I have to keep going. On really hard tests I always get very nervous, but I know I just have to keep on going and TRY MY BEST.
That is why I choose courage.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
My One Little Word that I`m selecting is hope. Why I chose this word is because it means a lot to my family. I understand that I must have hope in every little task or big task and must have hope that it won`t fail. I must hope that I`ll put all my hope not to fail God`s task that is set ahead of me.
Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW is EXCITING. The reason I chose that word is because I hope that in the new year there will be very exciting and fun things to do. I think this word applies to my life because I hope there will be exciting trips and adventures. I think this word will guide me through the year because maybe i could take some risks and some challenges.
From,
James Dennis
I have selected inspiration as my one little word because my family loves and supports me in a way of no other. They love and support me so well that I get all the inspiration I need to achieve all my goals. I also chose the word inspiration because it inspired me to accomplish the things that I've done in my life so far. Inspiration will guide me through 2012 by helping me to rise up and accomplish my goals for the year.
Dear Ms. Sikes,
Hello, my OLW is effort. This is my word because in basketball and school I have to give effort if I want to get a good grade or get better at basketball. If I do this I feel like I will show people what there is inside of me. I can use this word in times when I'm not working hard or doing my best.
Ms.Sikes,
I selected "risk" as my OWL becuase I need to let myself relax and take risks without thinking the world will fall apart. If I start having a stress free day with risks, that could lead to stress free weeks, months, and years. If I take a risk and I am not so sure about it then I have to see the goodside of the risk and make sure I feel good about myself doing these things. My OWL will help me remember that taking risks is okay, if I get one small thing wrong, the world won't fall apart
Dear Ms. Sikes,
The word I have chosen for my One Little Word (OLW) is FAITH. The reason I chose FAITH was because I want to have faith in everything I do. Like, I want to have lots of FAITH in my decisions, friends, and most importantly GOD. For example, I don't always know if I am making good decisions. However, if I pray enough, then hopefully I will have more FAITH in my decision. Also, friends sometimes need encouragement and I want them to always know I have FAITH in them. Another example is I might think that my life is terrible, but I should just have FAITH in GOD, and know that He has a great plan for me. This is why I chose the word FAITH as my word for 2012.
Your awesome student,
Grayson
Ms. Sikes,
I chose the word Inspire for my One Little Word. I chose Inspire because the thing I want to do in 2012 is to inspire me and other people to try new things, take a risk, or step out of your comfort zone. The reason why I want to Inspire people is because I want to make a change in people’s life and in mine.
Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW is "organized."
I chose this word because I have not always been organized at school and home. I need this word to remind me to always be organized. If I am organized this year, I will be happier and have a better year at school. I will also get to keep my allowance if I'm organized at home and keep my room clean.
Dear Ms.Sikes
My OLW is strive. My goal is to strive to do better in many ways. Sports and academics are my main goal to get better at. I want to be a better family member and better to shine in Gods eyes.
Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW is change. The world applies to me because in 2012 I want to change by making a difference. I can use this word when someone is teasing someone or being mean to them I will change by standing up for them. I can use my OLW to guide me this year by doing good things for the world.
Your student,
Camden
Ms. Sikes,
My OLW is "active". I chose active because if you are active, you get exercise, and if you exercise, you feel happier. I also chose active because being active is healthy and good for you. The last reason I chose active is because it usually gets you out of the house, and you see nature. The word "active" is the word I will try to live by in the year of 2012.
My word would probably be, " HOPE"
I think it is very important to have hope every where you go and every day. This word applies to my life when I thought my grandmother was going to pass away. I tried to talk to her on the phone but she wasn't there.I had prayed for her and prayed when finally there was hope. We got a call after the surgery saying that she would make it. I then knew that that was HOPE.
My word for 2012 is "clarity." I tend to have difficulty making decisions, especially ones I know will have a great affect on my future. In April, I will be deciding where I will spend the next few years of my life. I have been and will continue to pray for God to give me clarity by showing me which school is just right for me.
I chose the word "think" because I need to start thinking before I talk to others.I also need to think about my after school activities so I can know how much time I have to do things.
mrs.sikes,
I chose the word respect because sometimes I mistreat my brothers. I feel like I have to give them more respect.
Dear Ms.Sikes,
My OLW is challenge. I choose callenge because this year I can challenge myself to do a lot of things. For example I can make good friends , do good in school, learn more about God, and sometimes take a break and relax.
Your Student,
Jamison
Ms. Sikes,
My One Little Word that would apply to my life would would be nice.
The word would apply to my life because I am very nice, and so are my teachers, and friends.
I think this word can guide me through the year because it is a word that describes all of the people I know, and I have been told that I am nice too, so I think that will guide me through the year. It will also help guide me through the year because I know this word will always help me go through times.
Here are some examples of how I can use this through the year: If I am ever mad I can think back, and think ok remember how I wrote a blog post on nice, I still need to be nice because the year is not over. Maybe if I am sad and I get stressed out, and think I am not this sad, mean person. I am Gabriella she is a nice girl, and that is who I am.
Ms. Sikes,
I have been thinking of what my One Little Word [OLW] is and, I have thought of perseverance. This word tells me to stand up for what I believe. That means a lot to me in my life, to try new things, and to get back on my feet. GOD teaches us to believe in him and he will help you get back on track. That is my OLW for 2012.

Dear Ms. Sikes
My word is try because I never try.
I always back out and
I never try new things.
I do the same old things.
If I try, I think it would make me a better person.I'll use that word to guide me through the year
by trying new things and taking a chance.
Your Student,
Katelyn
Dear Ms.Sikes,
My one little word is trust. I chose trust because I will trust others more than I usually do. Trusting others helps people a lot. When I trust others it will make them trust me. That is why I chose trust.
Dear Ms.Sikes,
My one word is "Accomplish". This applies to me because whenever I start something I always quit because it gets to hard or I don't like it anymore. This year I can persevere in gymnastics, homework, and basketball. I think accomplishing school work will help me in life when I get older because I will be used to getting things done and persevering in hard things.
Your student,
Anna
Dear Ms.Sikes,
My one little word is peace. I chose the word peace because I know God will provide peace throughout the year. Sometimes I think everyday there will be some issue like bullying, gossip, or more. People can be mean, but God always provides peace. Peace can help me push through 2012!!!
My OWL word is "Perserverence" because I feel it is a word that will help me through this new year. I think of it as my word because it will help me fight through the challenges through the year of 2012 with God. My OWL word is a word that encourages me to Perservere through all the hard times and will keep my head up high. I think it will help when I maybe am struggling through a hard time.
My word is self-control it applies to me because sometimes I make a comment at the wrong time. It also applies to me because sometimes I do not choose to talk at the right time. One time I might do it is when someone is talking.
Dear Miss Sikes,
My word for 2012 is trust it inspires me. I think it will make me get better at it. If I work hard at trusting, I will get better at it.
Your student,
Grant

Your Student,

The first poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is about a new girl in school who is not afraid of anything. Not even snakes, or lions. If she ever gets afraid of things they happen in her dreams.
The second poem “Mother to Son” is about a mother talking to her son about how to never give up. It is also about how life may be difficult at times, but you should always preciervier.
I vote for the poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me“ because I like how the author rhymed two lines then put the title. I also like how in some places the author named certain where something bad is happening but the girl is not scared. The rhyme choises also made the passage flow better.
