What exactly is a blog?

Dear students,

What exactly is a blog, and why are we using it in 4th grade?

We will use the blog to communicate about different things we discuss in class. Our online post will extend our conversations from class, and allow us to see what other classmates are thinking as well.

We will use the blog for many different things. Often I will write a post, and you will be asked to respond to it for homework. For example, we might post about different reading strategies, or use it to respond to poetry in the spring. However, this year I would also love to have students write a blog post, and classmates can respond to their post.

Today, I am interested in your thoughts about the blog. Please answer the following questions:
1. What excites you about the blog?
2. What questions do you have about the blog?
3. What ideas do you have for future blog posts or using the blog?

I look forward to reading your first blog response!

Dear Ms. Sikes,

1. I am excited about all the social networking in fourth grade. I am also excited of using the internet more than paper!

2. Later in the year, I am wondering if we will post in the blog everyday? And if we don't what will be the punishment?

3. I was thinking you could tell us to read an entry and we could reply about reading strategies and progress. Same with writing.

Dear ms. Sikes,

I am excited about the blog because I think it will be fun to not only have to do our own work, but also see what our classmates are thinking as well.

I have one question, I am wondering will the blog be just academic or will we be able to talk to you and our friends?

I think every Friday you should send out a brain teaser and we we should reply to it over the weekend and by the beginning of every week we should answer it, and you announce who got it right.
