One Little Word (OLW) for 2013

Each new year, two of my cyber-mentors challenge teachers to find their One Little Word (OLW). The OLW is one word that will represent, or symbolize, the year ahead. The word should be personal and thoughtful. My mentors spend weeks thinking about their OLW, making sure they select a word that will really guide them.

I have thought a great deal about my OLW. For 2013, I selected "trust" as my One Little Word. I selected "trust" because I don't always trust God's plan and try to make my own way. I need this word to remind me to trust not only His plan for me, but also to trust in the strengths and talents He has blessed me with, rather than worry about the future. Trust can apply to my life in so many ways - through friends, work, my students, my family, myself, and ultimately, God's plan for me. I will use this word to guide me through the days of 2013.

What is your One Little Word? How does this word apply to your life? How can you use your OLW to guide your year? Comment to this post with your OLW, and examples of how you can use your OLW this year. Here is a list of possible words to help you. Copy and paste this link if you need suggestions for a word.

Dear Ms.Sikes,

My own little word is accept. I apply it in my life because I don't always accept God's plan, and I try to control what happens in the future. I can apply this in my school year by just accepting what we are doing right then and right now.

The word I chose was bold. I chose bold because this year I want to stand out more and not be as shy. Another reason is that I will try to speak up more. I think this is a good word for me.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW word is COURAGE. The word courage applies to my life because I'm going to have courage my whole life. My OLW can guide my year by standing up for someone or even standing up for myself. Here is one example: When some one is bulling your friend you have to stand up for your friend. You can't just watch and see your friend get hurt.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW for 2013 is confidence. I think this because I need to have more confidence in God and his plan for me. This will help me through the year because when I have more confidence in God's plan I will be more relaxed.

I choues “accept” because this year I am going to half to “accept” I am moving. That has been really hard for me, and I am moving out of the only house I ever remember.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
I thought a great deal about my OWL. For 2013, I selected the word Adventure. I feel like Adventure applies to my life because I fell that I’m adventurous when I can do what I want. I also feel that in reading that I can read adventurous books, and if I get into the book, and get lost in it that I will feel adventurous as well. I think adventure will guide my year because if I feel that I can’t do something I will just remember the word, and I will try to by adventurous in my work.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
My OLW is brave because I need to be brave and try new things. I don’t need to be shy anymore about meeting new people and trying new things. This word applies to my life because my parents are both doctors, so we always have new people come over to our house for dinner. I am always the one who will not talk, so the other doctors think I’m very shy but I’m very talkative. This word, brave, will guide me throughout the year by trying new things and stepping out of my comfort zone.

I chose believe. Believe is my O.L.W. because I don't always believe in myself . I need to believe in myself because if i don't then I won't ever be able to do amazing stuff.I also need to believe in God too , so that he can lead me to do amazing stuff.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
I chose positive because I won’t be as disagreeable and be more agreeable. I will likely try more things because when my parents I’ll think of the good things that could happen not the bad things.

I have thought a lot about what word best describes me. In my search, I found that believe is a word that I think would best describe me as a person because sometimes I get tired of believing that God is going to make good come out of my eye conditions. It can also help me believe in myself, even when I feel like I simply can’t do something I really want to learn how to do. Believing can also open new doors; let’s say you want to become a famous actor, you would have to believe in yourself with all your soul, body, mind and strength. That is why I chose believe for my 2013 One Little Word.

My one little word is "follow". I need to follow God's plan anywhere I go. Like, he brought me to Tennessee. God has a plan for all of us and we need to follow it. I am going to use this word to guide me through 2013. Follow is a small word, but it makes a big difference in life.

Dear Ms.Sikes,
My OWL is remember. I chose this word because I have to remember to do things such as getting my math fact log signed and writing down my reading log.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
For 2013, my OLW is forgiveness. I choose forgiveness because in the earlier years of my life, I wasn’t forgiving people enough and I lost friends because of that. But now, I want to change that. In this New Year, I will forgive people more.

My OWL word is appreciate. Appreciate applies to me because sometimes I forget to appreciate all the things God has done for me and put into my life. I will use "appreciate" to guide me through my year of 2013 by appreciating everything everyone does for me. I will use in some ways like thanking forgiving.

My word is love. I chose this word because I needed to tell myself that I always love my family even though I sometimes don’t like them, but I always love them. I can try not to get mad at my siblings as much.

For 2013 I chose the word hope. I chose hope because I can hope for God to lead me in the right direction, so I don't lose my hope. I can receive hope by being hopeful in 2013. That is the One Little Word I am going to focus on this year.

Trust. I need trust to keep my friends secrets. I can use this to be trusted by the teacher to do things only trusted kids can do.

I have thought a lot about OLW and I think it is a great idea to have students pick a word and abide to it for the rest of the year. I have selected the word adapt because we need to adapt to 2013. We also need to adapt to new skills, friends and things. When we adapt to things quickly we get to do other things and be in the moment.

My word is forgiveness. This word fits me because I need to forgive a lot of people this year. It will help me because forgiving is very important to people who you need to show it to. They will feel a lot better about you, and will remember you in their heart as a good person. That is why I chose forgiveness. I think forgiveness is a great thing!

The word I chose is fearless. I chose fearless because I need to be brave, and not scared of everything. For example, once I was going to slide down a waterfall, and I was so scared that I was about to not do it. I ended up doing it. Everyone else did it again, but I didn't. Even though I was scared, I still did it. When I did it I felt fearless!

I think my One Little Word should be Amazement because I feel like I don’t think enough of the world God created for us. I should learn to love and amaze the wonderful world we have and instead of getting board we have to explore.

Dear Ms. Sikes,
My word is adapting. My word means very much to me. Last April my grandma had a stroke. She was in the hospital for a long time, but now she’s a bit better and she lives with us now. It has been hard to adapt with a new person in the house that can’t walk and can’t remember things anymore. It is a new year and I hope this year the word adapting will help me adapt all the way to having my grandma live with us.

Dear Ms.Sikes,
My little word is trust. I want people to trust in me all the time, and know that I will not lie to them. I want people to trust in me in my life. I can trust in my year because I want my friends to trust in me, and in my life.

My little word is Faith. I need to have FAITH in God’s plan for me. It will help me remember that God has a plan for me, and I have to follow it.
