I like Mother to Son better because the story is more meaningful and I agree with Katie that the puncuation is really good. What I liked about what the author did in her poem is she had the mother telling the son that because they have different skin they have a harder life than people who have white skin. I know that the mother would not want her son to have a bad life like she had a bad life. I have a text to world connection about how all of the people who were slaves had to say the same news like the mother said to her son. They probably have the same feelings as the mother did. That is why I like Mother to Son better.
The poem's simile/metaphor is very well written because I can think and connect to the poem easily. The poem's word choice also helps to expand your thinking about life and how it works. The words also make the poem very meaningful. The poem's way of writing is very detailed that it makes the poem seem realistic. I made a text-to-self connection that life is hard and so are other things too. But life is hard and you might not always get or do what you want but that's the way it is, and that is why I liked Mother to Son better. I hope you liked it too.
Out of these two poems I would have to choose Life Doesn't Frighten Me because people can have a bad life and people cannot be afraid of things. I would rather not be afraid of things than having a bad life. So if I were say one of my friends I would choose Life Doesn't Frighten Me.
For my FINAL FOUR vote is "Mother to Son" because...
POET'S CRAFT: "Mother to Son" has great use of punctuation because it has a different type of punctuation at the end/middle of every line, I think it really explains the way to say the poem. Also I love the word choice in this poem, it has a different way of speaking. (More southern maybe?)
ORIGINAL THOUGHT: I love this poem's meaning because it is so true. Life is hard, life doesn't come easy and you have to keep trying. Also this poem is very special because sometimes bad and sad things happen and this might be that very special something to cheer you up and make you feel better.
So that is why I think it should make it to the TOP TWO!!
I vote for Mother to Son because… This poem has lots of great poet’s craft such as good word choice (ain’t, goin’) and good punctuation (lots of commas.)
I can infer that a slave mother is talking to her son saying that life is not easy, but you’ve got to just keep going. I can infer a slave is talking by the ways the author puts in the slang. A connection I made (t-s) is that in basketball, even if you are losing, you’ve got to keep trying.
I chose "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" because it shows that you shouldn't be afraid of life no matter what happens. I like "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" because of the different ways the poet says things are gonna happen, bad or good, but you should see that it is meant to happen so just keep living your life!
I chose the poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me," because it has great rhyme scheme like park and dark. It also has line breaks which end where they should right at the end of each phrase, this poem is my favorite with all of the things in life that may scare you. I visualize a little kid in their own room thinking about the wind blowing outside how it is sometimes scary but he/she is NOT scared at all. This poem reminds me of when I was littler and I was scared of the dark and the wind howling outside.
Out of these two poems, I have to choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” as my favorite.
I liked them both a lot, but after I thought about it for a while, this was what I thought... “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has more rhyming words and it says some bad things about life, but then it is saying, these things are a little scary, but God is always with me so it doesn’t frighten me.
I think these poems are very alike. I think this because they both bring hope, they both are good messages, they are both great poems, and more. That made it very tough to choose.
I vote for the poem “Mother to Son” because it explains the life isn’t always going to be easy as in the line “And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I love the word choice that makes it sound like a African American talking to her little boy.
I am voting for "Mother to Son" because I think the meaning is very important. It says that life can be very hard, but you just need to get back up and keep going. I also like the descriptive words the poet uses throughout the poem. In my opinion, I think this is one of the best poems out of all 16.
Out of the two poems "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" and "Mother To Son" I like, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me". I like how the author said,"i go boo make them shoo." I like how it is saying sometimes life can be scary and when it is hard to never give up on anything. I also like how it rhymes in places like wall and hall, and loud and cloud.
I choose " Mother to Son" because I like the word choice and metaphorical term the mom or dad uses when they say "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." What I visualize when I read "Mother to Son" is when my mom or dad gives me on a lecture on a mistake I just made.
I liked "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" best because "Mother to Son" didn't rhyme as much as I like to hear a poem rhyme. But In "Life Doesn't Frighten Me", it said "Life doesn't frighten me at all" over, and over, and over again. I wish the author would have varied the lines up a little bit. In "Mother to Son", I imagine the mother and her son as slaves, (no wonder the mom's life is hard) and her and her son are sitting in the master's sitting room taking advantage of their spare time, trying to talk quietly and fast because they knew that if they were caught they'd have to work even harder the next day.
ORIGINAL THOUGHT: I like this poem because it reminds me of my mom. My mom makes me really happy so i like this poem. it gives me hope and it feels like she is saying when you get older it will be harder but don't give up.
WRITERS CRAFT: I like the writing in this poem because the way the author writes it makes it sound like an african person.
I vote "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" because I like the poems background and how the author describes it. My original thought is that this poem is a great poem and it makes sense to me. The poet's craft in this poem is line breaks.
I chose the poem "Mother to Son" because... POET'S CRAFT: In "Mother to Son" it had great word choice of slang, and good detail, and the thing about the detail was it was not so so so long almost filling the page and it wasn't so so so short that you couldn't see the deep thinking of the poem, the detail was just right. the poem had little simile in it but not much. ORIGINAL THOUGHT: I really found interest in both of the poems so it was really hard to choose. But I love hearing about the slavery life of some people, oppose to different kinds of shoes. I love the fact that the mother was telling her son to stay strong no matter what, because that what she did. The mother had a great way of telling her emotions, when she said,"Life for me ain't been no crystal stair."
I chose the poem "Choosing Shoes," because it has great rhyme scheme like white and tight shoes. It also has line breaks which end where they should right at the end of each phrase, this poem is my favorite with all of the different kinds of shoes. I visualize a HUGE wall of shoes at a HUGE mall that has many different shoes and sizes. This poem reminds me of when I see different kinds of shoes I wonder how and why we wear those shoes, like in other countries people wear other shoes. I loved this poem!!
I choose "life doesn't frighten me" because... This poem really touches my emotions every time I hear it. This person who is talking in this poem must have a lot of courage to say she is not afraid of anything. This is my favorite poem of the whole tournament. I hope it will win the championship.
The poet has great rhymes in this poem. All the rhymes go with the poem very well so it will make complete sense. I like the way Maya Angelou says a few lines then quotes the title, "Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.”
I chose "Mother to Son" because I like the comparison life to a crystal stair. My original thought is the way the mother talks, because it's like she's talking to you.
I chose the word "trusting" because this year I want to learn how to trust a little. One example of this is if somebody wants to borrow something I will let someone borrow it. I will also learn to trust them mentally, such as on math.

The poem I picked was "Mother to Son".
I like how the poet made the mother say slang.
I bet the poet had wrote that poem because maybe he got that talk when she was younger.
I choose the poem Mother to Son.
The poem is about a mother saying life isn't easy and it's been hard for her.
The reason I chose this poem is because the mother says to the son to try his hardest and to never give up.

I chose Life Doesn't Frighten Me
Original Thought: I like it because it seems scary and hard core for one kid, but he is not scared.
Poet's Craft: I noticed that it repeats Life Doesn't Frighten Me at all a lot in the poem.

My favorite poem is,"Life Doesn't Frighten Me," because I love the meaning of the poem to keep your head up even though you are scared inside.
