Poetry Madness: Game 2

During March, the best college basketball teams vie for the National Title. In order to be the best, each team must state their case by playing the best, scoring the most, and ultimately advancing to the next round.

To create a sense of poetry madness in our room and celebrate poetry and songwriting, we will read a bracket (2 poems) each evening and advance a class winner the following day. However, like the basketball tournament, we must use specific criteria to judge a poem: meaning, poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition), ability to visualize, and your personal connection.

Each night you will answer the following 3 questions about the poems you have read.

1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? ***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Read Game 2 and choose your favorite.

I read The Falling Star first. It was about a stooting star and everything it does from the time it apperes in the sky untill it desiperes miles and miles from where it started.
I read Roger the Dog next. It was a owner talking about was her/his dog does.
I liked The Falling Star better than Roger the Dog because it's short, sweet, and I like the way the poet talks about all the things that a shooting star is.

The first poem, Roger the Dog is about the life of a dog. The dog is a great creation. I like Roger the Dog because the dog is telling us something about what he is.

The second poem, The Falling Star is about a star falling showing you it's abilities in the sky.

I chose Roger the dog to win this round because it ymes and makes a ton of sense compared to the Falling Star.

The Falling Star= The falling Star is about a star that is beutifaul and bright and it is falling. I infered that it is a shooting star because it says,
"Good only to make wishes on
And then forever to be gone.

Rodger the Dog=Roger the Dog is about this dog doing his every night routine.

I picked The Falling Star because there is strong discripive language and there was good deatail in the poem.

The falling Star was about wanting things, but seeing how you can't have it.

Roger the dog was about how sometimes people can become greedy and selfish. It was ment to show what thoose kind of people were like.

I choose robert the dog because I like the meaning a lot more than the falling star, and because I thought it made more sence

The meaning of The Falling Star is a shining star is so brilliant and once you see one you must wish on it, but when it’s gone, it’s gone.

The meaning of Roger the Dog is how a lazy dog lives, and how THE DOG likes it.

My vote goes to Roger the Dog because I have a connection to dogs being lazy around the house, not always meaning my dog but in movies and books. The poem also makes me feel happy and relaxed.

The first poem,"The Falling Star", is about a person seeing a falling star in the sky and describing what he or she felt when they saw it.

The second poem,"Roger the Dog",is about Roger the dog and his owner describing what roger does and how he sleeps.

I choose,"The Falling Star", because it has a little more felling in it than,"Roger the Dog".

The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about a dog that is really lazy and he won't do anything, except sleep and eat.(And there actually is no meaning that I know of.):(

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about how no matter what there will be struggles throughout life and that you might not achieve everything you do.:)

I think The Falling Star ws better because,it had a meaning to it, and it was also something I could connect to. I also liked how the poet used show-not-tell to describe the event. I also think the poem had really good word choice.

I didn't like Roger the Dog because, it had no meaning. It also didn't have very discriptive words.

The poem “The Falling Star” is describing a shooting star. The part “Blinding the North as it went by” means that shooting stars were so bright and the words “Good only to make wishes on and then forever to be gone.” Means that you get to wish on a shooting star and then it disappears.
The poem “Roger the Dog” is a biography about a dog named Roger, who sleeps a lot.
I like the poem The Falling Star better because it lets the reader look at another way of describing a star and I also liked that every other word rhymes.

The first poem I read was Roger the Dog. It was about a lazy dog that lays around the house all day. And only gets up to eat his dinner.
The second poem I read was Falling Star. It was about a bright and beautiful shooting star that was lighting up the sky and then gone forever seconds later.
I choose Falling Star because shooting stars are magical to me..The poet had really good detail.

Today on the poem, Roger the dog I thought it was about a dog named Roger, the reason I liked this poem is because I like long poems better than short poems. On the second poem The Falling Star, I thought it was about a fast falling star, the reason I liked this poem is because I like how it rhymed I could read it just once and understand it perfectly. My favorite poem was The Falling Star even though I like long poems better than short ones I still liked it better the reason I liked this poem is because it was a easy read poem for me, and because it was well written.

The first poem I read was Roger the Dog. The poem is about a dog that's lazy, sleepy, and selfish.
The second poem I read was Falling Star. It was about a shooting star that was beautiful and graceful as it moved through the sky.
My favorite poem was Roger the Dog because I liked how the poet used descriptive words to show how lazy Roger the dog was.

The first poem is, The Falling Star, it is about a person who saw a star and thought that it was the most beautiful star in the sky.

The second poem is called, Roger the Dog, it is about a lazy dog who only likes to eat and sleep. Even if you roll him over he will still be asleep.

I chose the poem, Roger the Dog, because it has more punctuation and it is indented more. It also rhymed, so that was better than the first poem.

The first poem falling star is about a star that is falling and she is describing the star.

The second one Roger the dog is how the owner tells what the dog does.

They both describe things but I like falling star.

The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about a dog that does a lot of things and is lazy, but sometimes he is peppy.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about someone seeing, “The Falling Star” (a shooting star) and the star is dying.

Out of both of these poems I choose The Falling Star as my favorite. I chose The Falling Star, because of the author used rhyming words which I think sounded good, the line breaks after each description of the shooting star, It was happy when Sara Teasdale said, make a wish on it, but it was a little sad when she said, forever to be gone. The story was also very detailed.

The reason why I didn’t chose Roger The Dog was because, it was not as detailed, but there were similes which I liked, it didn’t seem as meaningful to me as the other poem, I didn’t enjoy some of the word choices like, sack of a snoring dog. I think it makes the dog sound lame and gross.

The poem named Roger the Dog was hard for me to understand the first time so I read it over a few more times and thought it was about a dog named Roger. I thought that this poem had great details like, "You could roll on him like a log.

The Falling star was the other poem. The Falling star was about a star that was falling and was never going to be seen again and how pretty it was to see.

I liked Falling Star better because I thought it had better descriptive language and was a lot easier for me to understand and actually know what it is about.

I vote for The Falling Star because I like the meaning of this poem and I like the rhyming.

The Falling Star is about a star falling in the sky and it is to pretty to be sold and too quick to hold.

Roger the Dog is about a dog that sleeps and eats, but it has great rhyming.

I chose The Falling Star because it was describing one little star and it was a simple story. Both stories seemed to have great rhyming.

Roger the Dog is about a lazzy dog named Roger. The meaning really is about a dog named Roger that, sleeps, eats, scratches his fleas, sits by the fire, and does not like to exercise. It does not say that he is lazzy in the poem, but you can infer by the things Roger does.

The Falling Star is about a shooting star. A shooting star is another word for a falling star. The person describing the star must be very fond of the star. I can tell because they call it lovely.

I choose The Falling Star to advance in the tournement. It had a better meaning to it. Roger the Dog is kind of boring in my opinion. Roger the Dog did have good rymes. The Falling Star is little more exciting than Roger the Dog. The Falling Star has some good rymes as well. The Falling Star pulled off the win of game 2 of the poem tournement.

Rodger the Dog is about a dog's every day life. The Falling Star is about a shooting star coming and going to other places.
I chose The Falling Star because the rhyme was real good, but it was a hard decision.

Roger the Dog was telling me that Dogs are Dogs and that they can be lazy or crazy no matter when.

The Falling Star was telling me about a star falling from the sky and how it was to fast, to beautiful, to buy or to sell, but could make wishes come true.

The poem I picked was...Roger the Dog because I liked all the similies, line breaks, rhyme, and word choice. I think Roger the Dog had a lot of rhymes. I also it picked it because I have a dog and he is a lot like what they were explaining Roger was like.

The Falling Star was about a shooting star and people watching it go by and see how beautiful and unique it is, and how you will never be able to catch it and keep it.

Roger The Dog was about a dog who is living a very calm life and takes it pretty easy. He really wants to lay around until it's time to eat, and then go back to sleep.

The Falling Star was my favorite because it gives more meaning and more facts about the story rather than Roger The Dog. But by the meaning facts I meant that it says that you can never catch one and it is a one of a kind star.

I interpreted that the first poem Roger the dog was about a boy telling about his dog and what he does.
I interpreted that the second poem The Falling Star was about the author telling about a shooting star.
My favorite poem is Roger the Dog because I love animals and love the authors choice of words and great description.

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog that is lazy or maybe
older.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a person who sees a falling star only for a second and makes a wish.

I like Rodger The Dog, because it is telling more about the character (the dog) and what he does all the time.

I liked the Falling Star better because Roger The Dog was nothing like my dog who is very active. Falling star descriptive language and sounded very beautiful.

The falling Star poem is about how great the star and how it is great.

Roger the Dog is about how it discibes the dogs actions.

I like the falling star better because I like how it rhyms and i also like the word choice to discribe the star.

The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about a person who is talking about what Roger the dog is like and how he carries on life.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a person who lost something or someone who were in their hearts forever.

The poem I chose was Roger the Dog because I loved the rhyming and the word choice because the words had meaning in them, and I liked the rhyming because it made the story more funny and fun.

I also liked the ability to visualize and I had a personal connection. I thought the poem was easy to visualize, and my personal connection was my dog acts like that too was; so it was easy to understand. :)

The poem The Falling Star was about how beutiful a shooting star looks in the night sky.

The other poem called Roger The Dog was about a dog whos favorite things are sleeping and eating.

I chose to vote for The Falling Star because I thought it had a better meaning. The auther also used descriptive words to explain how the star was soaring through the sky.

I think that Roger the Dog means that some people in this world are lazy and they're not really living their lives how the can. I think that The Falling Star means if you have never seen anything so beautiful in your life that you couldn't reconize the greatness of seeing the star in a once in a lifetime chance. I think that Roger the Dog should win because it was wirten like I love to read poems like that.
