Poetry Madness: Game 1

During March, the best college basketball teams vie for the National Title. In order to be the best, each team must state their case by playing the best, scoring the most, and ultimately advancing to the next round.

To create a sense of poetry madness in our room and celebrate poetry and songwriting, we will read a bracket (2 poems) each evening and advance a class winner the following day. However, like the basketball tournament, we must use specific criteria to judge a poem: meaning, poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition), ability to visualize, and your personal connection.

Each night you will answer the following 3 questions about the poems you have read.

1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? ***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Tonight please read Game 1 and choose your favorite.

This is an example post.

The first poem, I Too, is about race and how the poet is accepted over time and is a part of America.

The second poem, Sun Song, is about a song for African-Americans to sing about the song to bring them hope.

I chose I, Too as the winner because I like the deeper meaning of change and how the poet uses each stanza to tell the story. I also like how Hughes changes one word in the first and last line to show acceptance.

Dust of Snow= Dust of Snow is about this person who is disscouraged about snow falling from a tree.

Mother to Son= Mother to Son is about a mother who is telling her son that there are obstacles in her life and that you should never give up in your life.

The poem I liked better was Mother to Son because it told a mini story and you would think about the mini story and infer that she and her son might be African Americans because the mother has an acccent. Also, when there was the Civil War, the African Americans were in very bad danger.

I choose snow dust because I understood it. I didn't understand Mother to son very much.

I read each poem, Mother to Son and Dust of Snow. I thought that each of them were good but I thought that Dust of Snow had better details and was a lot easier for me to understand.

On the first poem Dust of Snow, the way it stood out to me or the main idea is, the crow gave him a change of mood, and on the second one, Mother to Son, the way it stood out to me (main idea) was it was a mother to son conversation, and the mom tells him not to give up It took me a few times to read over Mother to Son to figure out what it meant to me, but after the 3rd time i thought for a minute and figured it out. In my opinion I personally liked Dust of Snow, because the way they wrote it was I think better than Mother to Son because in Mother to Son they never indented and it was hard to read like Ellie said today when we met in class, that is my opinion.

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about a man having an unpleasant day who is changed by God's creations.

The second poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother telling her son about her lifetime and encouraging him to never give up. Life isn't always easy.

I chose Dust of Snow because it teaches you to look for the good things in life.

I chose Dust of Snow to win this round.

The first poem, Dust of Snow is about nature and the changing of moods.

The second poem, Mother to Son, told me that life isn't easy, but you should keep on trying.

I chose Mother to Son because of the meaning and I liked the pick of word chose. I felt that the meaning was a lot deeper than Dust of Snow and meant a lot more. Mother to Son tell you a very good lesson; you have to keep on trying through life.

I think the poem Dust of Snow has many meanings but mainly I understood that the weather can change your mood.

I think in the poem Mother to Son the meaning is that life won’t come easy, it’s a hard way up, and you have to keep trying.

My vote goes to Mother to Son because I like the line breaking. I like how it breaks at every descriptive adjective, to show emotion. I also like it better because I think it is much deeper and has more meaning.

The first poem, Dust To Snow, is about a man who faces a bad experience, but he changes from that and becomes a better person.

In,Mother To Son, Life is, and has been bad for this woman, but she is not going to let that happen to her son and she is giving him advice.

I personally like Mother To Son better because it is more meaningful to me, it is more detailed, the author uses metaphors and similes, for example, its had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn, and places with no carpet- Bare. I think that has to do with descriptive language too.

I don't like Dust Of Snow as much, because its not as meaningful and why was it terrible, and how? What did he change?

The first poem I read was called Dust of Snow. It explained to me that when you do something bad your heart changes and you should try to fix the mistake.

The second poem I read was called Mother to Son. I think it was about life and how it is bad at sometimes and good at sometimes, but you should never give up!

The poem I picked was Mother to Son because the poem related to me a lot more that the other one. Also, I picked this one because it showed me that in life there is going to be hard times and good times, but your just got to keep going. I liked how the author wrote it by using his language he spoke in and the word choice.

The meaning of the second poem, Mother to son, is about a mother who was talking to her son about how life has it's ups and downs.

I vote for Mother to son because he is telling it from a different angle.

The first poem, Mother to Son is about a mother giving her child advice and not wanting her child to grow up like she did. I could tell she was not educated because she used the words “ain’t” and other “slang”’ words and that is why she probably had a hard life.
The other poem, “Dust of Snow” is about, God is the crow and the dust of snow is forgiveness to the person who has rued the day.
I liked the Dust of Snow better because, I like how it the poem flowed with the descriptive words and meaning something in a short poem.

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about someone who made a bad mistake and is trying hard to fix it.

The second poem, Mother to Son, is about the mother is telling her son to keep on trying, and work even harder to get it.

I chose Mother to Son, because the meaning really stands out to me; the personal connection is that my dad tells to keep my head up and keep on trying. The line breaks are real and I would say it like that if I was talking that poem out loud. I also love the word choice because the words make it easy to understand. :)

I thought Mother to Son won, because I like how it is so descriptive of the mother and that her life is not going so well. From reading the poem I kind of thought it was about a mother and a son trying to be free from slavery, and the mother is trying to tell her son not to turn back or away from geting free.

Dust of Snow was about an experience that came unexpected by the crow sprinkling snow on the author and it made him in a brightened mood.

Mother to Son is about a mothers hard life and her wish to keep trying and be an example for her son to keep pushing forward when life gets hard.

I choose Mother to Son because it has more meaning to it and in Dust of Snow that could just happen to any body but having a rough life with a son and having to also take care of him doesn't usually happen every day so i choose Mother to Son.

You can put my tally on the poem called Mother to Son. I liked Mother to Son better than Dust of Snow for a few reasons.

1- The meaning in Dust of Snow isn't really important.
2- I think Mother to Son was written well. For ex, it had a lot of similes (describing words). But they weren't just similes, the similes were telling about the mom's life.
3- The meaning in Mother to Son is true. Life might be hard sometimes, but you have to keep pressing on.

The first poem,"Dust of Snow",is about a man that has done wrong and changes by God's creations.

The second poem, "Mother to Son", is about a mom telling her son a metaphoric term which means life is path with twist and turns but, don't look back keep on going and don't stop and if you do this life will be a little easier.

I choose ,"Mother to Son", because I like the metaphoric term Langston Hughes used and his word choice.

The meaning of "Dust of Snow" is that you can change the way you look at things in a blink of an eye or they take some time to change. Ms. S told us in class that a girl read the same poem over and over and over again but one of the last times she read it she read it in a new way that she had nevver thought that she would see it in. The meaning of "Mother to Son" is about a mother talking to her son while being a slave. She was telling him "No matter how hard life might get, just keep on going." Those words in my opinion inspied me so much that I looked at that part very differently than the rest of the poem. The poem that I chose is Mother to Son because even though it had words like lookin' and goin' it actually showed the picture in my mind through those words. you could really deepen the understanding of the poem through those words.

My interpretation of the first poem, Dust of Snow, is the author is trying to tell you that if the weather changes it can change your feelings too.

I interpreted the second poem, Mother to Son, to be about a mother telling her son that her childhood was hard and his is easy.

My favorite poem is Dust of Snow because I liked the way the words flowed smoothly and rhymed.

In Dust Of Snow the writer is telling us that sometimes the smallest of things can change our mood or make you happy.

In Mother And Son, the mother is talking to her son and telling him that her life has been difficult and that she has not given up and she then tells her son to follow in her footsteps.

I like Mother And Son because it has better dialogue about what the people are saying and doing.

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about a man who has had a bad day, and sees a crow that cheers him up so that he cannot "rue" the whole day.

In the second poem, Mother to Son, is about a woman who is probably some type of worker who has had a bad life and tells her son NOT to live the life that she had. To never give up and go after what you want to do.

I chose the poem, Mother to Son, because it had more punctuation and it rhymed so it had more of a flow to it. I didn't chose Dust of Snow because it wasn't as descriptive as Mother to Son. I hope Mother to Son wins!!

The first poem,Dust of Snow is about how the the crow comes down and how it shook a dust of snow that fell on the man and how it changed his thinking and emotion.

The other poem,Mother to Son is about how the mother is trying to get her son to keep trying and to not give up.

I like mother to son better becuase i like the line break and the main idea.

Mother to son, was a story about a mom telling a little boy that life was hard for her and she must had not very good education and giving her son advice.

Out of the 2 I like mother to son was my favorite.

Dust of Snow is about how if you try something, that could change your life.

Mother to Son is about how you should keep on pushing it even if it is hard.

I think Mother to Son was better because it had a good moral. It also had good show not tell, even though that's not poet's craft.

The first poem Dust of Snow is about a person who is sad and ends up feeling great.

The second poem Mother to son means to never give up and quit.

I like the second poem because the mother is trying to encourage her son.

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about how forgivness helped the man who had rued the day.

The second poem, Mother to Son, is about how a mother has gone through many terrible things like, not being well educated, or as I think of this poem as something written by a slave, beat for trying to escape, and doesn't want her son to have to go through the hard times she went through.

I liked Mother to Son better because, it was more meaningful than the other, and it was more easier to connect your life to because, every mother is concerned about her child, and they don't want anything to happen to you. It might not have had proper grammer but that was how it was back then, so it might help give the reader a better image of whst it was like.

The meaning of Dust of Snow is that a person gets knocked down in life. They don't literally get knocked down. When he said that the crow shook me down he meant just that. Maybe it changed his mood from happy to sad. He said it was the day he rued. That means he regretted that day. Maybe he regrets doing something to make the crow shake him down.

The meaning of Mother to Son is about a mother talking about life to her son. When she talks about tacks, splinters, boards torn up, and places with no carpet. It doesn't have to mean that it is just that those are the only bad things I life. The mother is using those words to describe parts in life. It is a very meaningful poem. When the mother talks about how it is sometimes dark in life she means there are sometimes sad or hard times in life.

I chose Mother to Son to advance in the tournament. Mother to Son touched my feelings more. One of the reasons I picked Mother to Son is because it was longer. I understood Mother to Son's meaning a lot more. I could infer to Mother to Son in a meaningful way. Well, because I am a son. Both poems were good, but Mother to Son pulled off the win....

The first poem I read, Dust of Snow, was about a man's change of heart after receiving an unexpected "God wink" from the natural elements around him.

The second poem I read, Mother to Son, was about how a mother is explaining to her son that even though life has it's ups and downs, you must be strong and never give up.

I chose to vote for Mother to Son because I liked the encouraging message. Although written with an African American slang which is not always easy to read, I believe the mother's words are good advice to any reader.

Dust of snow is about a person that is outside and a crow knocks snow on him. Then he or she says that it changed their mood.
Mother to Son is about a person talking about their mental life and he talks about the different things in his or her life to the son.
I chose dust of snow because of how it talks to you thrue the story and it means a lot to me. This story reminds me of the time we had our biggest snow of winter. I woke up that morning and I hadn’t got much sleep the night before so then my dad told me that we had a snow bay and raised my sprits!
